Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet many people hesitate to seek help when they are struggling. Whether you are dealing with stress, anxiety, depression or a more complex mental health condition, your GP is often the best first point of contact. At Anketell Family Practice and Skin Clinic, we provide a safe, judgement-free space where you can talk openly about how you are feeling.

Your GP as Your Mental Health Partner

Many people do not realise that their GP can play a central role in their mental health care. GPs are trained to assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of mental health conditions. They can also create a Mental Health Treatment Plan, which provides access to Medicare-subsidised sessions with a psychologist or other mental health professional.

Under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you may be eligible for up to 10 individual sessions with a psychologist per calendar year, with a portion of the cost covered by Medicare. Your GP will work with you to determine the right type of support and refer you to a suitable professional.

    Recognising the Signs

Mental health challenges do not always look the way you might expect. Common signs that it might be time to talk to your GP include persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much, loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy, increased irritability or mood swings, difficulty concentrating, withdrawing from friends and family, and unexplained physical symptoms such as headaches or stomach problems.

    Breaking Down the Stigma

One of the biggest barriers to seeking help for mental health is stigma. Many people worry about being judged or feel that they should be able to manage on their own. The truth is that mental health conditions are incredibly common and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Just as you would see a doctor for a persistent cough or a sore knee, it is important to seek support when your mental health is affecting your daily life.

    We Are Here for You

At Anketell Family Practice, our doctors take the time to listen and understand what you are going through. We offer longer appointments for mental health consultations so that you never feel rushed. If you or someone you know is struggling, please do not hesitate to reach out. You can book an appointment with one of our GPs to start the conversation.
